Giving Back to Our Community

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we donated our services to a local breast cancer survivor.

-

Lauren Webber was 33 and a new mom. Breast cancer was the furthest thing from her mind. She had no family history and didn't feel sick. She knew that regular mammograms aren't recommended until age 40.

But, one morning last year, she saw a baseball-sized lump sitting on top of her breast. It had developed so rapidly that maybe, she reasoned, it was just a clogged milk duct. Certainly not cancer.

But it was. And the phone call that confirmed it as stage-three breast cancer shook her.

"That was the first time I ever had a panic attack and I just hung up the phone on them. I was like, I can't even have a conversation with you. I'm sorry. I have to go," Lauren, of La Grange Park, remembers.

Suddenly, her life had changed dramatically.  She had an excruciating wait for test results to come back to confirm the cancer hadn't spread. Soon after, chemotherapy started  (16 sessions over five months) while she also had a 6 month old at home.  She credits her husband, Jimmy, and other family members and friends with stepping up to get her through these tough times. But she also decided she could then help others by documenting on social media what was happening to her.

"It sucks to be that person that has (cancer), but I just love helping people because I know how badly they need it. And I know that me having that connection with people got me through it," she said. "I met so many women (through social media channels) that I, to this day, don't even know what they look like (but) we have texting conversations of extremely personal things because so many people don't know anyone to talk to.

"Some people just message me like, 'hey, thank you for posting that. I scheduled my mammogram today.' That's exactly what I wanted to come from this."

That selflessness and care for others is exactly why Lauren and Jimmy were gifted a full house window washing from Dave Weishar, owner of a Fish Window Cleaning franchise in Chicago's West and South suburbs. Dave and his team wanted to do something special pertaining to Breast Cancer Awareness Month and linked up with the cancer non-profit Andrew Weishar Foundation in selecting Lauren and Jimmy. It's a cause with deep meaning to Dave and his business partners.

Dave's sister, Sue Pegler, is a breast cancer survivor who, like, Lauren, had a double mastectomy. Sue's husband, John Pegler, one of Dave's business partners, understands how important early detection and knowing your family history is in the fight against this disease.

"To go through the effort and actually learn about your family genetics is critically important," John said. " Some people don't want to go there because of the fear of what they might find out. The flip side, of course, it turns out to be what you need to know."

Dave’s other business partner and operations manager, Matt Hermann, understands that all too well. He lost his wife 25 years ago to breast cancer and two daughters in the last two years. It's a sad reminder that not everyone is a survivor but Matt nonetheless sees the importance of breast cancer awareness and openness in talking about it.

“To me, it's about the need to get the word out ... it's all about catching it early. It's self exams, getting mammograms on a regular basis. If you have family history, it's getting gene tested,” Matt said.

His daughter Christine tested positive for the BRCA gene and did everything right, but her cancer was so aggressive, it eventually was too much to overcome. However, a surviving daughter also tested gene positive and has had an elective double mastectomy and elective hysterectomy to keep cancer at bay.

Matt said helping out a cancer survivor like Lauren and stressing awareness is a way to deal with the heavy toll of losing family members.

"It makes me feel great because I know how hard the diagnosis is and what it can do to the family dynamic and environment. So if I can pitch in in any little way, I'm all about it."

Lauren’s one-year anniversary of completing treatment is Oct. 30.  She's one of about 4 million breast cancer survivors in the U.S. She understands that it can happen to anyone and, in fact, a woman in the U.S. has a 1 in 8 chance of developing breast cancer over her lifetime, according to breastcancer.org. Seeing your doctor at least once a year and developing a relationship with them will help with prevention, she said.

"Keep on top of your health," Lauren said. "If you see anything that looks different with your breasts, call your doctor. It doesn't have to just be a lump. It could be your nipple inverting into your body. It could be skin changes. So if anything stands out to you, just call your doctor."
