Hard water stains
Hard water stains. You have all seen them, haven't you? Those little whitish dots that look like water spots that will not come off of your windows. Those are hard water stains. Why won't they come off with cleaning? Well, lets explain what they are and that may explain why they won't come off. Hard water stains are created when mineral content that is dissolved in everyday tap water are left on glass over extended periods of time. If you have a sprikler system that is constantly spraying your windows day after day, the mineral content of the water will be left on the glass as it dries. Well, ok, but why won't it clean off? The minerals in the water that are left on the glass actually etch the glass on a microscopic level. To clean the hard water stains off takes a special kind of cleaning. In fact its really not a "cleaning" as much as a glass restoration. The proper chemical to use to do this is an acid based paste that is rubbed on and then taken off. The acid in the paste actually removes a microscopic layer of glass evening out the surface so that the "spots" are no longer visible. There are various brands out there but you would be better off using a professional for this type of job.
